In the Department of History of Ghent University (Belgium), a four-year PhD studentship is available as part of a research project on early Byzantine historiography. The project focuses in particular on the transmission of historiographical texts and the complex processes of updating, summarising, adding and excising. In particular, it asks how these processes impact on the concepts of „text” and „authorship” with which we approach early Byzantine histories.
You possess a good master’s degree of History or Classics (or will possess one by 30/9/2012) and a good knowledge of Latin and Greek. You have an interest in historiography, literature, and in conceptual issues. You are able to work independently, whilst also a team player.
Your tasks include: completion of a PhD within four years, the co-organisation of workshops and a conference, limited amounts of teaching, and occasional assistance with other research carried out in the project. Acquaintance with Byzantine Greek and a willingness to learn Dutch constitute advantages.

We offer you the possibility to work as part of a high-quality and large group of scholars working on late antique and Byzantine history and literature at one of Belgium’s leading universities, a scholarship of approx 1600 euro (net) per month, further training in our Doctoral School, and the possibility to study one year or semester abroad (depending on additional funding).
The succesful candidate is expected to start in 2012, preferably 1 October at the latest.
For enquiries, please contact Prof. Peter Van Nuffelen (peter.vannuffelen@ugent.be). Please submit your application, consisting of a CV, personal statement (ca. 1 page), and the names of two referees, before the 1st of January 2012.
